How did we get here?

A Brief History of Rubbish

From prehistoric ocean giants to plastic bottles on the beach — a lot has happened in between.

  • 205 Million Years Ago — Triassic–Jurassic Extinction: A mass extinction event wiped out roughly half of all species on Earth, clearing the way for the Jurassic Period. Marine reptiles began their slow, extraordinary rise to dominance in the world's warm, shallow seas.
  • 150 Million Years Ago — The Jurassic Sea: The Plesiosaurus ruled Britain's prehistoric oceans. Its long neck, barrel-shaped body and powerful flippers made it one of the most extraordinary marine predators the world has ever seen. The Jurassic Coast was its hunting ground.
  • 66 Million Years Ago — End of the Dinosaurs: The Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event ended the reign of the dinosaurs and marine reptiles. The Plesiosaurus vanished — but the fossils remained, locked in the cliffs of the Jurassic Coast, waiting to be found.
  • 1823 — Mary Anning's Discovery: Legendary fossil hunter Mary Anning discovered the first complete Plesiosaurus skeleton on the very coastline that Rubbish Dinosaur now calls home. Her find rewrote our understanding of prehistoric life on Earth.
  • 2026 — Rubbish Dinosaur Launches: The world's first immersive AR Plesiosaurus trail arrives. Thirteen GPS locations. Hundreds of thousands of possible combinations. One very unique dinosaur — waiting to be built. By you.

At each stop, dig for a missing piece of the Plesiosaurus. You might find a pristine fossil — or a plastic bottle. You genuinely never know.

Bring It to Life

Once you've hit all 13 locations, the app stitches your 3D files together, names your unique creation, and brings it to life in AR.

"My kids are still talking about it"

Sarah M., Jurassic Coast trail

We did the Lulworth Castle trail on a Saturday afternoon and honestly it was the best thing we've done all year. My daughter was devastated when she dug up an old TV instead of a bone — and then absolutely delighted when her dinosaur turned out to be completely ridiculous. We'll be back.

"Educational, hilarious, and genuinely thought-provoking."

Tom H., Primary School Teacher

We used Rubbish Dinosaur as part of an environmental education day and the children were completely captivated. The conversations it sparked about litter and the natural environment were exactly what we'd been trying to generate in the classroom for months.

"I beat the 1 in 195 odds. The merch is stunning."

James K., Rubbish Dinosaur winner

I genuinely didn't believe the merch was real until the gift code hit my inbox at the end of the trail. Worth every step of those 13 locations.
